Nelson Holbrook White was born in July 0f 1932 in New London, Connecticut, the second of three sons of Nelson C. White and Aida Rovetti White. Like his father before him, he was always surrounded by art and in contact with a number of well-known artists. After graduating from Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts in 1951, he began study at Mitchell College, New London, Connecticut but left to pursue studies in the violin, musical composition and theory. During this time, he also pursued study in painting and drawing with his grandfather and his father. In 1955, Mr. White decided to devote himself to a career as an artist and traveled to Florence, Italy to become a pupil of Pietro Annigoni, the world-renowned artist. By 1956, he had won two prizes for his work in Italy and had begun to study with the great Italian teacher, Nerina Simi. He traveled and worked with Annigoni and by 1960 was exhibiting his work in Italy and England, as well as the United States. Nelson H. White divides his time between Waterford, CT and Florence, Italy and draws inspiration from nature. Nelson H. White acknowledges the influence of the art of both his father and grandfather and continues the family tradition of a love of the gentler side of nature.

His work hangs in many public and private collections worldwide. His most recent exhibitions include, The Florence Academy of Art Alumni Exhibit, W. H. Patterson Gallery, London, UK, 2006, The Florence Academy of Art Exhibition, Brigham Galleries, Nantucket, MA and The Florence Academy of Art Exhibition, Solomon Galleries, Dublin Ireland, 2006, International Maritime Exhibition, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT, 2006, Annual Alumni Exhibition of The Florence Academy of Art, Corsini Family Stables, Florence, Italy, 2005 and 2006, Solo Exhibit Grenning Gallery, Sag Harbor, New York, 2005, Two person show Grenning Gallery, Sag Harbor, New York, 2003, Realism Revisited, Hirschl and Adler Galleries, New York and Panorama Museum, Germany, 2003.

“Painting is the expression of an artist's emotion, but it requires extensive discipline and training to express his intention.”
